Video CD (VCD) became one of the first formats for distributing digitally encoded films in this format, in 1993. "Digital versatile disc" is the explanation provided in a DVD Forum Primer from 2000 and in the DVD Forum's mission statement, which the purpose is to promote broad acceptance of DVD products on technology, across entertainment, and other industries. Toshiba had been using the name 'digital video disc', but that was switched to 'digital versatile disc' after computer companies complained that it left out their applications." The Oxford English Dictionary comments that, "In 1995, rival manufacturers of the product initially named digital video disc agreed that, in order to emphasize the flexibility of the format for multimedia applications, the preferred abbreviation DVD would be understood to denote digital versatile disc." The OED also states that in 1995, "The companies said the official name of the format will simply be DVD. DVDs containing other types of information may be referred to as DVD data discs. Rewritable DVDs ( DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM) can be recorded and erased many times.ĭVDs are used in DVD-Video consumer digital video format and less commonly in DVD-Audio consumer digital audio format, as well as for authoring DVD discs written in a special AVCHD format to hold high definition material (often in conjunction with AVCHD format camcorders). Blank recordable DVD discs ( DVD-R and DVD+R) can be recorded once using a DVD recorder and then function as a DVD-ROM. Such discs are a form of DVD-ROM because data can only be read and not written or erased. Prerecorded DVDs are mass-produced using molding machines that physically stamp data onto the DVD. Variants can store up to a maximum of 17.08 GB. A standard single-layer DVD can store up to 4.7 GB of data, a dual-layer DVD up to 8.5 GB. The medium can store any kind of digital data and has been widely used for video programs (watched using DVD players) or formerly for storing software and other computer files as well. We saw his physical abilities as he performed yoga in CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (2016), and here he expertly creates the movements (and howls) of the wolf he believes himself to be. Of course, this movie is not at the level of that Anatole Litvak classic, but George MacKay's performance is quite something to appreciate. If you've ever seen THE SNAKE PIT (1948), then you have some idea of how disturbing institutional treatment can be. It's unsettling to see the actions and mannerisms of these patients, but equally unsettling to witness Dr. Mann (played straight-faced by Paddy Considine) is also known as 'The Zookeeper' as the patients include: a parrot, a duck, a squirrel, a horse, and a German shepherd. Mann (get it?) seem more like torture and humiliation than treatment. The questionable curative therapies conducted by Dr. Next we see Jacob with his parents at an institution that specializes in Species Identity Disorder. It's his butt we first glimpse as he prowls the vegetation growing in nature. George MacKay stars as Jacob, a young man who identifies as a wolf. That's a sentence I hope to never write again. The film opens on the bare butt of a male in the forest. It's easy enough to connect the dots to gender dysphoria, but it also walks a fine line between mental health and sadness (and if we are being honest, a bit of humor - at least as presented here). These are folks who identify as something other than human, typically a type of animal. Writer-director Nathalie Biancheri latches on to the discussion by bringing up Species Identity Disorder, also known as Otherkin. We all know that gender identity, and identity in general, are topics receiving a great deal of attention these days. Which is to say this: the soundstage is spectacular, wide, and deep, with true definition. Now, I mix on British speakers (ProAc Studio 100's-yes, they're bright but granted, they're hi- fi speakers), and I recently switched, so I'm not scared of new speakers. They are refined, reserved, laid-back, and unsympathetic. In a word, these speakers are very British. Which can be an advantage if your speakers are bright. So, when used in the standard nearfield position on the SSL, they ended up firing about a foot over my head as I was sitting down. I found that the angle of adjustment isn't enough to give me the placement I wanted on top of my desk. Like, say, if your console's meter-bridge is too high to allow the tweeters to be anywhere near on-axis with your ears if you stand the speakers up. Yes, I know that sideways is the worst possible orientation for nearfields (it has to do with phase coherency and dispersion-see Billy's comments below), but sometimes it's the best option. They must be oriented vertically by means of two fixed feet on the front corners and an adjustable one in the rear. The enclosures are curved, which means that there is no way to lie them down on their sides. The design is gorgeous, but it leads to a placement problem. Their amps will eat any voltage in the world, they have attachment points for the near-universal OmniMount system, and they'll push 108 dB max continuous SPL when asked. These speakers weigh 60 lbs each, and they're the best constructed of any I've ever seen. It houses two monoblock amplifiers, a 50 W for the tweet and a whopping 250 W for the woof, and it's wrapped in a die- cast aluminum cabinet that is, quite literally, built like a tank. The SCM20ASL Pro is a really heavy, active, two-way design with a 6.5'' woofer and a 1'' dome tweeter. So I brought in my good friend, engineer/producer Jason Lehning, to do a point-counterpoint with me. I had the ATC combo for over a month, and I'm struggling to sum up the pros and cons without coming off too hardcore. Sometimes the UK comes off somewhat reserved and detached, but I discovered that the secret is in giving up any preconceived notions and enjoying the apartness of it all. It's a killer city-full of culture, history, and an overwhelming sense of grandeur. We'll end with a statement from ATC founder and chief designer Billy Woodman. let's start with Reid's take on the ATC's and follow it with Jason's. Therefore, with this review and all the others we publish in Tape Op, I suggest you make your own choices starting with whatever knowledge you gain by reading the reviews and learning about the reviewers and their work, and then seeking out firsthand experience with the gear, if at all possible. While their opinions may differ, what they say objectively about these monitors is actually quite similar. Even if you don't know any of their work, from what each of them says about the ATC's-and about mixing in general-it becomes very clear that Reid and Jason are both exceptional engineers with well-trained ears. I might like something while you may find it unusable for your way of recording-even if the like/dislike is for the exact same reason! That's why it's interesting to read a double review like this. as I mentioned in my intro to the Dynaudio double review, all of us are picky about our gear, and that's why it's great we have so many gear choices. And after reading Jason's opinion on the ATC monitors, I have a better understanding of why The Bees album sounds so damn beautiful. It's both sparse and lush at the same time, with beautiful pop vocal arrangements that remind me of the music I loved when I was younger and less jaded. I happen to own and love The Bees album Starry Gazey Pie. He spent the first part of the year engineering and co-producing the upcoming Guster album, and he just recently recorded a single for Tonic frontman Emerson Hart (which Reid will be mixing). Reid may think Jason's claim to fame is being Reid's good friend (just kidding, Reid!), but others will recognize Jason's name on albums by Lyle Lovett, Bryan White, Alison Krauss & brother Viktor Krauss, Bill Frisell, The Derailers, Dolly Parton, Randy Travis. The second viewpoint is from producer/engineer Jason Lehning. He's worked on hundreds of albums of all genres he's won one Grammy and mixed on three Grammy-winning records and his expert mixing has contributed to many Top-10 chart-toppers and Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum sellers. He was a mixer in 2005's Pot Luck Studio Project, he moderated the Mixing Panel in 2004, and he was a panelist in 2003. The first viewpoint is from Reid, who many of you have met at the last three TapeOpCons. Here's another "double" review of a monitoring system-this one orchestrated by F. Many drivers have probably heard that the engine needs a few minutes to warm up, especially in the winter. How long should you let your car warm up? If you’ve broken down in the midday heat of an Arizona summer, it may take some time. How quickly that happens depends on several things, including ambient temperature. It’s a best practice to call for professional assistance and wait until your temperature gauge is in the normal range. If all else fails, pull over as soon as it's safe to do so and stop the engine. If that doesn’t help, turn on the heater, since car heaters typically work by redirecting engine heat into the cabin. First, turn off the air conditioning and roll down the windows. If your engine really is overheating, there are a few things you can try to avoid serious damage to your car. How long does it take for a car engine to cool down? Temperature gauges get old, and while they're usually quite reliable, they're also fallible. Finally, there's a chance your gauge is simply broken. Other reasons for temperature increases include a broken water gasket, a malfunctioning coolant valve, a broken fan or fan belt, and other problems. Adding coolant to your radiator, or having your mechanic do it, may address the problem. How to deal with this will be discussed in more detail later.Īnother explanation for higher temperature readings might be coolant loss, possibly due to a leak. The first and most obvious is that your engine has a serious problem and really is starting to overheat. If your temperature gauge is inching above its typical day-to-day range, there could be a few reasons. You’ll probably notice your needle stays within a middle range that accounts for these smaller, day-to-day fluctuations. The reading is affected by factors like the weather, using the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system or taxing the engine by towing heavy loads. Every vehicle is different, and optimal temperature ranges may vary. If the needle in your car’s gauge doesn’t sit dead center, this is common. How to read your car engine temperature gauge Instead, they show a hot-cold scale with a needle that sits around the middle. Most cars, however, don’t provide numerical temperature readings. Experts tend to agree the optimal engine temperature is around 190 to 225 degrees Fahrenheit. Although an overheated engine can be dangerous, it can also be preventable. Not only that, but an overheated engine can also warp or crack other vital parts of your car. If your engine overheats for too long, or too often, it could potentially break down - and repairing or replacing an engine isn’t cheap. What does your car engine temperature gauge do? But what else should you know about your car’s temperature gauge? Let’s dive in. That’s why your car’s dashboard includes an engine temperature gauge and/or a warning light to help you monitor the engine’s temperature and notify you when the temperature is out of the safe range. Though your engine was designed to withstand the heat, overheating is still possible and can cause some damage. All this hard work generates a lot of heat - it is a combustion engine, after all. Remove and discard the intake manifold and thermostat housing gaskets.Your car is a marvelous machine, generating impressive amounts of power to drive you forward. Remove the 10 bolts and the lower intake manifold. Remove the 2 thermostat housing-to-lower intake manifold bolts. Remove the bolt from the fuel supply tube-to-rail bracket. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure. NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Why are you replacing the sensor? What is the issue? The manifold must be removed to access the sensor. The sensor is under the lower intake manifold. |
